Kid’s Summer Challenge Stay Safe Online Guide
We’re excited you and your child are taking on our Kid’s Summer Challenge. However, as this challenge is taking place virtually online we want to ensure you take the time to read our guidance on keeping your children safe whilst fundraising. Remember to Be Safe, Have Fun!
You must be over 18 to sign up to the challenge, join the Facebook group and set up a fundraiser on behalf of a child.
By signing up for this challenge you will be confirming that you will be signing up on behalf of a child/children. You must understand that you are 100% responsible for the children taking on the challenge, signing up for the challenge and managing the online and offline fundraising on the child’s behalf.
Please be mindful of the content you share both in the dedicated Facebook Group and on your own social media accounts. Sharing photos of your children on social media come with risks, so please ensure if you do so, you do it safely.
How to safely share:
- Privacy settings: It is advisable to set your social media accounts to private and use the strictest privacy settings.
- Personal Information: Before you post photos, please ensure confidential information is not visible in the photo. i.e can you identify your child’s school from their uniform? Is there full name on any artwork or certificates in the back ground? Is there a recognisable place in the photo that identifies your child’s location/home town?
- Meta Data & Geo-location: Turn off location tagging and metadata, which contains time, date and sometime the photos location. Do not use “check-ins” as they can reveal a lot about your family’s identity and habits.
- Ask permission: If your child is at an age that they can content to their photos being shared on social media, it is important to ask from their permission.
- Refrain from posting photos of other children: Remember to respect the privacy of other children. If you do have permission to post photos of other children, again make sure these photos do not contain any confidential information.
Risks:
- Difficult to remove: Remember that even if you delete a photo from social media, it is difficult to completely erase them. Many social media sites and platforms T&Cs give them the rights over the content you share on their platforms. They may then license images for use by third parties.
- Inappropriate use: image of children may be copied, downloaded, screenshotted or shared without your or your child’s consent
- Vulnerability: Children may become vulnerable if photo is shared alongside information that makes them identifiable.
- Long Term Implications: any image/video and any comments become part of a child’s public image. This could affect them later in life.
A parent or guardian, over the age of 18, must set up a Facebook or JustGiving Fundraiser on behalf of the child. The parent/guardian is fully responsible for the use of the fundraiser. If a child wants to be involved with their fundraising page, a parent/guardian must supervise and remain responsible for this page at all times.
A sponsorship form will be provided in the fundraising pack or available to download online. A parent or guardian must supervise the child’s use of this form and remain responsible for it at all times. A parent or guardian must be present with the child when the form is in use and the child is asking for sponsorship. A parent or guardian is responsible for the handling, counting and paying in the sponsorship money collected. Please note we will not process the child’s details from the form, therefore a parent or guardians details must be completed to enable us to process the donations.
Safety tips to share with the child:
- Always check with a parent or guardian that you can take part and fundraise
- Only ask people to sponsor you that your parents/guardians say it’s OK to ask
- Don’t go knocking on people’s doors or ask people on the street
- Never approach strangers!
