From our Homes (from Home)
Our Homes from Home are integral to directly supporting children, young people and their families. Our families need our homes to be safe and comfortable havens and we need volunteers to help make that possible. Young cancer patients have never needed our support more and that’s why we need you as part of our team.
*Please note we’re only currently looking for volunteers to fill this role in CLIC House and Sam’s House in Bristol, Jean’s House in Southampton and Paul’s House in London. You need to be over 18 years of age for this volunteer role.
Our staff teams make sure our Homes from Home are clean, tidy and homely for those staying during some of the most difficult times. We often need extra support in order to do this, especially when working to cleanliness and health and safety protocols. That’s why we’re looking for a House Support Volunteer.
Tasks will vary from week to week depending on the comings and goings of the home. This might include:
- Making up the beds so families don’t have to worry about having clean sheets after a long day in hospital
- Tidying the kitchen, families are asked to clean up after themselves but we go the extra mile to make sure the kitchen is kept clean and tidy for everyone
- Ironing! You wouldn’t believe the washing and ironing needed in our homes, we make sure families don’t face the extra time burden of that on their own.
These are just a handful of the types of hidden support we make sure families have when they’re staying at our homes. There are other activities you can support us with so get in touch to speak to one of our House Managers.
While this role is based in our Home from Home, your contact with families will be rare and informal when it does happen. You will be fully trained and inducted to the running of the home including our health and safety and safeguarding protocols.
At Young Lives vs Cancer, we recognise that opportunities for too many people remain a condition of their race, class, sex, disability, sexual orientation – or a combination. This has never been acceptable to us as an organisation. At Young Lives vs Cancer, we do not just accept difference — we value it, we celebrate it, we nurture it, and we thrive off it.
We positively welcome your application irrespective of your background. We are on a journey, and if you join us, you will be part of a community that is committed make a difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer.
